Week Three of Youths Winter Programme

It is our third week back on the bikes now settling into the winter training program. It is a hive of activity at the Lakeside Wheelers base camp Mullingar barracks on a Saturday morning with numbers continuing to grow.

After the chat with the whole group Naomi Wade under the Adult supervision of Diane and Camillus lead the turbo session while Adam and Derek (his Dad) took our Under 16s and juniors out for a road spin to chat about training and road based riding skills. Philip and Noel managed to hang onto the group by the skin of their teeth but our youths were comfortable throughout. Derek himself supported the National youth team for the last three years and has traveled all over with the team as a coach and team mechanic. He was very impressed with Lakeside Wheelers setup for youths and said that on this front we were at the leading edge of underage cycling in Ireland and he expects the next batch of great cyclists to come from Mullingar!

This week we changed things up a little with guest speaker Adam Stenson from Lucan who currently rides on the Irish National junior team and for the Nicholas Roche Performance team. With a fantastic season behind him, attending the worlds, winning the scratch race on track at the European championships and multiple placings in France and Belgium, Adam spoke about how he tackles winter training. The fact that he likes running and swimming also to mix it up in a week and does not overdo it through these months.

He also spoke about how he tackles race season from race preparation on the bike to sleep and nutrition. Some great advice for our youths, especially from someone who is also in fifth year and working towards the leaving cert.
