As the mild, dry weather continues to keep any serious frost, rain and wind at bay there have been some very big turn-outs for the first few sessions of the new winter activity programme. For example, last Wednesday evening almost 30 riders turned up for the mid-week spin along the Old Rail Trail. So big were the numbers that it was necessary to divide up into groups before departing on the 56km round trip to Moate and back.

This was an excellent spin and a great workout. Due to the profile of the converted Mullingar to Athlone railway line there is very little opportunity to freewheel but, with everybody showing good control and resisting the temptation to go flat out, this weekly group spin is suitable for members from all categories and everybody is encouraged to come along. Just remember, 6.30pm departure from the Co. Council Greenway car park and good quality front and rear lights are a must as are rear mudguards.

Other sessions such as strength and conditioning on Tuesdays and turbo classes on Thursdays are also well attended. The turbo classes are at 6.30pm and 7.45pm in the clubhouse. The Sunday spins are also incorporated into this programme and if the last three weeks are anything to go by then there is a great acceptance for the new structure. Both the A and B groups have been coming together for steady cycles on slightly hilly routes with the A lads taking the “Leader” role.

The weather is certainly playing it’s part of late so hopefully this will continue. All details regarding the new winter activity programme can be found on the club website.
