Midland League Team Time Trial and Prize Giving.

The Midland League 20km Team TT and prize giving will be on August 22nd in Horseleap starting at 7pm. There will be prizes for the first team home in both A/B and C/D Divisions. There will also be refreshments afterwards and presentation of prizes for both MIL and the TT in Paddy Ryan’s pub Horseleap. Please note that TT bikes are not permitted.

The last race of the day was the A4 race. We were represented by Aidan Farrell, Barry Pierce, Brian Collentine, Eoghan Kevlihan, Matt Burke and Roy Carey. 4 laps of the 14km circuit awaited all the 70 riders. There were numerous breaks on the first 3 laps with the Wheelers active in each one. None stuck however as the strong headwind on the main road and the hardworking main bunch not eager to let anyone get away. The pace settled down for the last lap with everyone jostling for position on the narrow twisty run in for the finish. There was a crash 1km from the finish line and all Wheelers were unfortunate to get caught behind it. Twenty riders managed to get through and contested the sprint for the prizes. Well done to all Wheelers who took part on the Day.

They were reeled in however on lap 5 by a hard working chasing bunch. The race then had to be stopped just before the village as there was a crash on the circuit and the road was blocked. The race was restarted with everyone back together for the last lap. Again there was a few attacks with 4 men going clear. They stayed away to the finish. The remaining places were all to play for and in the bunch sprint Billy managed to get a prize for 6th unplaced A3 across the line.

Even though the racing season is drawing towards a close with fewer events on the calendar, Lakeside Wheelers have been in action over the past week or so in both the Midland League and Kilmessan, Co. Meath.

Midland League Round 13 - Clara

On Thursday 8th August Tullamore CTC hosted round 13 of the Midland League in Clara. A 12km lap to be completed 3 times awaited all the riders. Again there was a great turn out of Wheelers across all categories. First race off on the evening was the A/B race. The B group containing 12 riders got a two and a half minutes advantage on the chasing A group which contained 8 riders. From the off the B group worked well together and in doing so the A group never made contact. In the bunch sprint Conor Hughes managed 2nd and Eoghan Kevlihan 8th. The remaining points were to be got in the A group sprint with Paul Crowley 10th.

The next race off was the C/D race. The D group containing 10 riders got a 3.30 min advantage on the chasing C group of 22 riders. The C group caught the D group on the second lap. The finish came down to a bunch sprint with Tosh Kiernan getting 3rd. Well done to all Wheelers who took part and finished just outside the points. The next Midland League report will be on Round 14 which is taking place in Mount Temple on Thursday 15th August at 7pm.

Kilmessan Open Races

On Sunday 11th August Navan Road Club hosted a number of open races in Kilmessan Co. Meath. First race off on the day was the Leinster Youth Road Race Championships. We were represented in the U16's by David Boyne. A 25 strong bunch lined up for 3 laps of the 14km circuit. There were a few crashes on the twisty technical circuit. The bunch stayed together to the finish with David finishing 9th despite having a mechanical issue on the last lap.

The next race off was the A1/A2/A3 race. We were represented in A1 by John Murray and in A3 by Billy Cunnane, Colm Lynch, Eoin Lynch and Richie Lenehan. All categories were set off together over 6 laps of the 14km circuit. From the start the pace was high with numerous attacks. A breakaway of 8 riders which included John Murray were successful in getting a sizeable gap on the main Bunch on Lap 3.
