Midland League Up and Running

This year’s Midland League got off to a flying start last Thursday evening with the first round hosted by Shannonside Cycling Club on the Mount Temple circuit.

This exciting league is growing in popularity with each passing year and due to the dry weather last week a large number of riders signed on. The format is two separate races catering for A/B riders and C/D riders to run simultaneously on the same circuit. In each race there is a slight handicap given to the B racers over their A counterparts and likewise with the D’s over the C’s. This system ensures all riders have a fair chance of winning on the night.

The advantage on Thursday for the B group was 1'45” on the A’s which resulted in the race coming together on the second lap. On the final circuit two riders, Longford CC and Planet X, got away from the bunch and managed to stay away to fight it out on the uphill finish. With 500m to go our own Roy Carey attacked and hung on to finish 4th overall. The chasing peloton was just seconds behind and contained several more Lakeside Wheelers members including Mossie Keane, Shane Jessup, Peter Rimmer, Eoghan Kevlihan, Tommy Casserly and Aidan Gorry.

With a total of 42 riders in this race it was a good showing from the “Wheelers” for an opening race and let’s hope a few of them make it on to the top step of the podium during the summer.

In the C/D race LSW was represented by Seamus Killian, Seamus Moran, Karl Moran, Jack Nugent, PJ Carey, Lorcan Caffrey and MiL novice, Roibeard O’Ceallaigh who managed to hold out for a fine 4th place. Well done to all who participated.
