It was a fun filled weekend again with racing on Saturday and Sunday for the youths. Saturday saw a return to Mondello for the youths after at least 15 years of not being there. Brave Alice Sherratt took on the task for getting the youth back to Mondello only days before she runs the 2015 Junior Tour. Delighted to say that we had a fun day there with 7 youths/Junior racing and putting in great efforts flying the Lakeside Wheelers flag.

It was a very windy day and while Mondello is flat it was a tough ride with sections seeing a full on head wind. In the U12s Boys/U14 Girls we had Caoimhe O’Brien, Gabby Fox and Aoife O’Brien, with Caoimhe and Aoife taking 4th and 6th respectively making the boys work very hard for the top 3 places. For Gabby it was her 1st open race and she did excellent work in completing her first race and second day in cleats ! one to watch.

Conor, Aaron and Naomi took to the course for the Under 14 race and this race started out much like a track race, a little more tactical cat-and-mouse. After a few laps it started to heat up but no one actually managing to make a break. In the end most of the group were together for the final kilometer and only in the last few bends did things start to string out. Aaron managed to get into the perfect position just before the last corner ahead of National Champ Sean Nolan and super-fast sprinter Ryan Geraghty. With a very short distance to the line Aaron managed to hold them off and take first place , a first for him on the road. Conor came in a respectable 7th just a few bike lengths off the sprint.

Finally we were delighted to have convinced Ian to leave the trusted companionship of Mick Reynolds, Jack Nugent and the rest of his Lakeside Wheelers A riders behind to try out an open race. Ian raced in the A4 race and put in an excellent performance around the course. It was a very fast paced race but he stuck in there until the very end and flew our Flag high on the day ! more to come from the Ian Lambden corner ..

Moynalty Grand Prix

Sunday saw us head to Mullagh Cavan for the Moynalty Grand Prix. We had 5 youths representing the Club in the races. The race was very well run and an excellent course with a technical town pass through, a fast flat section and a very very hilly finish. Again we had Caoimhe and Aoife O’Brien represent us in the Under 12 boys/girls and Under 14 girls combined race with Caoimhe taking a very solid 3rd place in a super tough finish, Aoife took 7th place . In the Under 14 race Aaron came 4th just pipped at the line by Aaron Heaney and off the wheels of winner Mark Smith. Conor Farrell just off the back of the group in the sprint for the line while Naomi finished only a few minutes down from the boys continuing to close the gap on them; her best day yet on the road.

In the Under 16 race we had Sean Kennedy taking on the field and putting in his best performance yet coming 4th just missing out on the prizes. Again it was a very tough finish but Sean’s hill legs came in to play moving from 8th to 4th over the line in the 400 meters to the finish. This is another week on week performance improvement for Sean as he keeps his eye on the Youth tour in Donegal at the end of the month .
