All roads led to Carlow last Sunday for the annual Des Hanlon Classic road race. This year’s “Hanlon” doubled as round one of the Cycling Ireland National Series so there was a huge crowd of riders across all categories.

Lakeside Wheelers was very well represented in the junior and senior ranks with varying amounts of success.

Both Aoife and Caoimhe O’Brien achieved podium finishes with Aoife taking first place and Caoimhe second place in their categories. All the other youths performed very well and they finished in the main group in their respective categories. Seven U16 youths raced (Leo, Conor N, Tommy, Cathal, Caoimhe, Mark and Tom) with two U14’s (Aoife & Mikey).

Aaron Wade and Conor T. Farrell participated in a tough 117km A3/Junior race. Both were well in the hunt and maintained leading places in the bunch until the dreaded mechanicals intervened. Aaron had to abandon due to two mechanicals and Conor T lost ground in the last lap but still managed to finish. Former Lakeside Wheelers rider Seán Kennedy (NRPT) rode an excellent race in this category to claim 2nd place overall which, on top of his 1st place in Carrick last week, rounds out a fantastic eight days for him so well done Seán.

Although the senior riders did not manage to make the podium the riders did themselves proud and there will be a full report of their exploits in next week’s notes.
