Midlands League Draws to a Close - Wheelers Take Team Prize

The ever popular Midland League came to a conclusion last week with the final event, the Team Time Trial being held on Thursday last 17th August.

The MiL as it is commonly known is an excellently run race league to accommodate riders from Lakeside Wheelers, Shannonside, Longford, Laois and Tullamore. Outside of these core clubs there is discretion amongst the organisers to allow riders from different clubs participate but it is generally not open to riders from outside the Midlands couinties.

Generously sponsored by Buckley’s Cycles, the MiL is often the platform where novice racers cut their teeth and then go on to participate in open races throughout the country.

This year’s league was staged over approximately thirteen races which included an individual Hill Climb in the Slieve Blooms and as mentioned, a Team Time Trial. Whilst Lakeside Wheelers did not get into the overall prizes the club’s riders did have success on different stages of the league. Most recently the three-man TTT consisting of Aidan Daly, Ronan Bracken and Seamus Killian were 3rd last Thursday whilst there were good results throughout the summer from Jack Nugent, Mossie Keane, Ian Lambden, Paul Murtagh, Brendan Kiernan and Caoimhe O’Brien (apologies for any notable omissions).

The good news for Lakeside Wheelers is that the club won the team prize in the A/B division and came 2nd in the same category in the C/D division. Well done to all riders who took part and a big thank you to the organisers, marshals, drivers and sponsors who make the MiL the greatest club league in the country.

Brendan Kiernan receives his prize at the Midland League prize-giving last Thursday.

Kennedy Wins in Wexford

In other racing news, congratulations to former Lakeside Wheelers rider Seán Kennedy (NRPT) who took an excellent win in stage three of the Wexford two-day race last Sunday. Seán broke away with five other riders and easily took his first open victory of the year. Seán has been trying very hard all year so this is a well deserved win and well done.
