On Saturday the PRO decamped to the hills of Wicklow with Robbie Kenny and Charlie Sheridan for some “Altitude” training in preparation for an upcoming trip to the Pyrenees. The Tour de France commences next Saturday and Lakeside Wheelers will be represented on the slopes of some of cycling’s most famous climbs by no less than eight members who are making the trip this year. The three of us will be joined by Mick and Dermot Reynolds, Joe Kenny, Ken Berry, Jack Nugent and also Jim Maguire from Shannonside CC.

The trip to Wicklow was really an opportunity to ride some roads less travelled and with Blessington as a base it is a very doable spin from Mullingar. We rode a lap of the Lough before we turned right to climb the Sally Gap and from there we descended to Roundwood via the very scenic road that runs above Lough Tay.

The coffee was beckoning so we headed for the equally scenic village of Laragh for refreshments. After the break we rode up the drag to Glenmacnass waterfall and on to the Military road leading us back to the crossroads at the Sally Gap. With Ireland V Belgium at 2pm it was time to turn for base. All told we had a very enjoyable 110KM spin when we returned to Blessington.
