With the winter behind us there is great enthusiasm within the ranks for the coming season and this is reflected in the plans for the coming weeks. Under the stewardship of Camillus Farrell our Youth coordinator, the Saturday morning spins will, weather permitting be moving outdoors and away from the turbo sessions which were very well attended in recent weeks.

The plan is for three groups to do varying distances depending on stages of development and targets for the year. The A group will cater mainly for U16’s and those riders who have lots of road riding experience. The B group will consist mainly of U14’s and novices or less experienced riders while the C group will cater for beginners. The initial plan is to bring the C’s on the Greenway/Old Rail Trail for the first few weeks to assess bike handling and group riding skills.

Al of these outdoor spins are contingent on Camillus having sufficient adult members to accompany the groups so if there are any adult members available to give a hand with the juniors on a Saturday morning please contact Camillus or any committee member.

Wheelers Success at National Youth Cyclocross Championships:

The club was well represented at this event staged by Cycling Ireland last weekend in Corkagh Park, Clondalkin. This event was open to girls and boys from U16 down with National titles up for grabs in the U16, U14 and team events. There were also support races for riders in the U10 and U12 categories.

Lakeside Wheelers entered teams in both the girls and boys events with Aoife O’Brien in the U14 girls, Caoimhe O’Brien U16 girls and an U16 boy’s team consisting of Aaron Wade, Conor Farrell and Rian Hogan. After a series of hard fought races the team did not come home empty handed with Aoife claiming 3rd and Caoimhe just missing out on gold but very happy with her silver medal. Well done to all riders and their support team of Damien O’Brien, Camillus Farrell and Philip Wade. The team also wish to thank Steve Franzoni and John Boyne for their assistance with bike set up.

Congratulations:

The Wattbike sessions hosted by Lakeside Wheelers for Cycling Ireland/Leinster in recent weeks were a huge success and several of our own riders were to the fore in the testing. As a result, Aoife O’Brien has been selected for the National Talent Team whilst Aaron Wade, Tommy Hogan and Conor T Farrell have been invited to a Leinster Academy coaching weekend to be held later this month in Castlebar. Well done to you all and best of luck for the 2017 season.
