The organising committee of the upcoming 40th anniversary “Suits and Sparkles” dinner have been extremely busy in recent weeks, getting everything in place for the big night on May 20th. Chief organiser, Jack Nugent has confirmed that the special guest on the night will be none other than former World Track Champion, Martyn Irvine.

The recently retired professional cyclist will be well known to cycling fans in Mullingar as he was the winner of the 2011 National Criterium Championships hosted by Lakeside Wheelers. Irvine however, will always be remembered for his heroics at the 2013 World Track Championships in Belarus. At these championships Irvine won a silver in the Individual Pursuit and followed it up with an amazing ride to claim gold in the Scratch race. In doing so he became the first Irishman in over 110 years to medal at a world track cycling championships. Prior to his retirement he also competed on the road with professional teams like United Healthcare and Asia Giant Kenda with whom he won stage 7 of the An Post Ras in 2011. It will be fascinating to hear him speak of his career when he attends what will surely be the social occasion of the year for all Wheelers.

Tickets for this unique celebration of cycling in Mullingar will be available in the next two weeks and are extremely good value with a price tag of just 45 Euro for a four-course dinner, live band and disco. Keep an eye on emails and these notes in the coming weeks for more details.
