We have emerged from another fun filled weekend with the youth squad where we managed to get out on the usual Saturday morning spin with eight in tow and attended The Moynalty Leinster Youth training camp on Sunday with five of our youth riders.

Following on from this there were multiple groups set out for their respective spins, The Under 12's covered around 20Km and Damien O'Brien joined those as both his girls were out flying the flag for Lakeside Wheelers. The Under 14's covered around 50Km with ,ore than 500 meters of climbing. Phil Joined the Under 14's out on the road and was very glad to have been able to "hang-on" in there using the excuse of watching out for the riders at the back of the group, they really are a great group of riders. The Under 16's covered about 64Km with nearly 700 meters of climbing. Sean Kennedy was out in this group and made us proud as he proved that climbers can emerge from the midlands. In short and at the end of the day it was great to see our youth out there riding with their peers and showing that they are well in the mix of good riders out there.

It is very important that they get high cadence into their legs and sharp hills, they will not fear hills by the time the season is in full swing!

Moynalty/Skyway Training Day

We attended the Moynalty/Skyway Leinster youth training day on Sunday. It was well attended by clubs all over Leinster with about a hundred youths. They put on a terrific day that started out with some coaching tips on "what is training ? , why do we train? and what should be in your kit bag the night before a race?. Not coming from a parent we are assuming that this knowledge will sink in :-) . Super tips on doing your checklist the night before and sorting out your bag after you get home.

The Saturday spin kicked off from Outdoor Escape with two groups. The more experienced riders headed off with Mick and David Fox, followed by Phil and Dave Byrne taking out the newer riders.

We were delighted this week to see another new rider emerge from the Sprocket Rocket program and join the ranks of the youth riders, the future is promising at Lakeside Wheelers. We kept to the Belvedere loop so we could have them work on very focused efforts and take them up the hill on the Lynn road to the Rochfortbridge road.
