Between inclement weather and lack of funds, there has been somewhat of a stop-start aspect to the beginning of the 2018 racing season. Some of the more established races have had to be cancelled in recent weeks due to a combination of freezing weather conditions and a lack of sponsors. However, our neighbours in Clonard had no such issues last Saturday and as usual the Clonard Racing Club put on a great race in the shape of the Rás Naomh Finian.

This annual event attracts a huge field from across all categories and there is always a big showing from Lakeside Wheelers riders. Unfortunately the conditions were less than ideal with a nasty mist and drizzle falling from the drop of the flag. The route is a straight out and back affair along the old N4 to Kilbeggan and returning along the same road for the finish at Moyvalley.

Lakeside Wheelers fared very well with Shane Jessup taking 3rd in the A4 race while new member, Frank Coleman took a fine 9th in the same race. In the A3/Junior race Aaron Wade yet again showed good legs taking 1st unplaced Junior and the KOH prize. John Boyne also rode very well finishing just behind Aaron in 2nd unplaced Junior. Finally, Alan Connolly took an excellent 15th position in the A2 race so, overall there are lots of positives for these and all the other Wheelers who took to the start line and hopefully the results keep coming as the season goes on.
