In this year’s tournament Lakeside had two representatives in the road cycling events which were split into age categories, with a road race, Criterium, hill climb and time trial to contest for each category namely Matt Burke (Prison Service) & Damien Shaw (Fire Service).

WPFG is the third largest international multi-sport event in the world and the largest ever sporting event to take place in Northern Ireland. In 2013 there were 56 sports held at 41 venues across Northern Ireland with competitors from 67 countries taking part.

Belfast hosted World Police and Fire Games in 2013 from 1-10 August. The World Police and Fire Games is a biennial event for serving and retired police, fire, prison and border security officers.

Damien continued his winning ways by claiming a hat-trick haul of gold medals by winning the Criterium which was held on the grounds of Stormont. Well done to both lads on representing your club and country at such a high level.

Next up was the Individual Time Trial (Damien only). Yet again Damien showed his class and power by winning the event again by a gap of some three minutes from fellow Irish rider Darren Hughes.

First up for our two athletes was the road race, with all categories going off together there was to many different races within the race. Damien was impressive throughout the race showing his class from the outset by bossing the race and getting away on his own to win the race solo by some three minutes.

Matt also rode a great race and managed to get away in a couple of breaks and took a fantastic 12th place in his age category. Speaking with Matt that evening he told me that it was a very tough race. Well done Matt I’m glad to see all the training was paying off.
