A big gang of Lakeside Wheelers headed down to the Deenside Cup near Kilkenny this Sunday to take part in this fairly new race to the scene. Last year was the first edition and was exceptionally well run, this year was no different. The club was well represented across the board with underage up to A1 top tier racers down to tackle the six kilometre climb on each lap. The hill comes at the end of each lap and is followed by a tricky descent to test the handling skills to the maximum.

Second place for Aran Wade and Seán Kennedy in their respective youth categories started the day well and shows off the talent that is being developed at youth level in the club.

In the senior events, good numbers of riders were present in the men's categories and the fourth round of the Women's National League. The seniors didn't fare as well as the juniors though. I can report some very aggressive racing from the girls and was told the same was true of the men but the podiums evaded us this weekend.

Bike racing is a difficult sport, in the A3 race over one hundred and sixty riders battled out for the inevitable three podium spots. The odds are always stacked against you and shows how hard it can be to take a prize home.

On a more positive note, local boy Damien Shaw, now riding for Team Asea showed off the class which gained him three podiums at the recent Rás and cruised to a fine win. It's hard to see how Damien can be beaten at the moment.
