All wheels pointed to Summerhill on Saturday, February 28th, for the Mick Lally memorial race. Due to racing in Navan the following day, it was down to four elite A4 riders to fly the flag for the Lakeside Wheelers.

With a short 45km race in store the pace was hot from the drop of the flag. The first 20km was the usual story in an A4 race; frenzied riders keen to find their place and stretch their legs. In the height of this mayhem the first crash, inevitable but earlier than expected, occurred at approximately 15km. Narrowly escaping it, Colin Pierce and David Nolan displayed excellent bike handling skills, with Nolan eloquently bunny hopping clear!

Then came the attacks, these were well marshalled by Colin Pierce, Barry Pierce and Derek Sheeran, who then tried to stall the bunch as David Nolan attempted to break. Unfortunately David was reeled in and swallowed up by the bunch with all events culminating in a bunch sprint to the finish.

As the pack extended across the full width of the road and with all four Wheelers boxed in, the win was taken by a Longford man with all Wheelers coasting over the line seconds later. Riding at a 39kmh average for 45km and with close to 400m of climbing, all four riders finished well, with scratch free bikes, pride intact and thoughts of what might have been.....

Roll on next weekend..!
