After a seriously long drawn out cold and wet winter, the members of Lakeside Wheelers were delighted to get the legs out in the shorts last weekend.

With the May Bank Holiday bringing some beautiful sunshine there were groups of riders to be seen all over the local roads. As the racing and sportive seasons are now well and truly underway some Lakeside Wheelers members went further afield to places like Wicklow, Wexford, Kerry and Athlone while others stayed closer to home and participated in one of the biggest charity events in Ireland.

Sportives:

Last Saturday a number of Wheelers took to the hills of Wicklow to participate in the Orwell Wheelers Randonne which is a 150km cycle through the Garden of Ireland. The lads enjoyed temperatures of 20 degrees as they rode some of the country’s most beautiful scenic roads and climbed some pretty hilly terrain along the way.

On Sunday a small group of members, Dan O’Toole, Gerry Heery, Pearse Murphy and Shay O’Toole travelled the somewhat shorter distance to Athlone to support the Tour of the Heartlands promoted by neighbouring club, Shannonside CC. Once again the fabulous weather enhanced the beautiful scenery along the roads of Roscommon and Galway and all had a great day out. Thanks to the members of Shannonside for their hospitality and for putting on a very well organised event.

The Cycle Against Suicide event rolled into Mullingar last Sunday with the Wheelers once again to the fore. This annual awareness event last visited Mullingar a couple of years ago so it was great to see the big numbers cycling through the streets again this year.
