(Racing Reports by Billy Cunnane)

In addition to the Dolan DSash on Sunday 4th August, Lakeside Wheelers were in action in Abbeyshrule and Mount Nugent where club riders put in good performances and were placed in both events.

Mount Nugent Grand Prix

On Saturday 3rd August, Navan Road Club hosted the Mount Nugent Grand Prix in Co. Cavan. We were represented in the A1 category by John Murray. 10 laps of a 4.8km lap was on the cards for every category. This was a handicapped event with the A4's getting a 2 minute advantage on the A3's which in turn had a 30sec advantage on the A1/A2's. The A3's were caught on lap 2 and the A4's on Lap 5. A 3 man breakaway went clear shortly afterwards and stayed away to the finish. John positioned himself perfectly in the bunch sprint and was rewarded with 6th position overall. Well done John on a great result.

Midland League Round 12

On Thursday 1st August Longford CRC hosted round 12 of the Midland League in Abbeyshrule. A 11km lap to be completed 4 times awaited all the riders. First race off on the evening was the A/B category. The B group of 6 riders set off first with a 3 min advantage on the chasing A group containing 12 riders. The B group were fortunate to have a lead car as the A group missed the left hand turn in Tashinny due to no marshal on the corner. Before they realised their mistake and turned they were some 8 minutes down coming into Abbeyshrule. A decision was made by the race organiser to restart the race.

The B group were set off again with a 1.5 minute advantage on the chasing A group for the remaining 2 laps. The A group made contact with the B group after 1 lap with the winning breakaway of 3 riders going clear of the bunch shortly afterwards. Paul Crowley Managed to get 2nd in the 3 man sprint. In the bunch sprint Steve Franzoni got 5th, Billy Cunnane 6th and Eoghan Kevlihan 10th.

Next race off on the evening was the C/D category. The D group of 12 riders set off first with a 4.30 min advantage on the chasing C group containing 25 riders. Again there was confusion at Tashinny with 6 D riders not taking the turn. The remaining 6 D riders stayed away to the finish with John Tully Taking 4th. The remaining points were to be contested by a bunch sprint with Tosh Kiernan 9th and Stephen Corroon 10th.

Next Midland League report will be on round 13 from Clara.
