A Bad start turned into a successful weekend for the Wheeler team across in Westport racing this weekend. The two day stage race started on Saturday with Paul Crowley and myself (Steven Franzoni) braving the sunshine for an 88km spin up to Achill. The day started badly, we nearly missed the start and turned worse for Paul who lost contact with the group and came in behind the main peloton. Have no sympathy, I believe he is tired after nine days in very sunny Gran Canaria. I finished safely in the peloton but suffered the wrath of the commissaries for crossing a white line and incurred a one minute time penalty (doh).

On day two David Boyne joined us to race the the youth stage race. His day went much better with a third on the stage one TT and fifth on the second stage road race giving Lakeside Wheelers their first yellow jersey of the season. Well done David - a future star for sure.

Paul took an executive decision on Sunday not to race and went into support mode for me. I repayed him with fifth place on the final stage. Some much unwanted points gained by me in the process and a great successful weekend for the Mullingar men.
