An exceptional number of people came out to the final night of the Summer Club League. There were members from all corners of the club. Some came to take part, some to marshal or watch the race. Some came to taste the famous burgers cooked by the talented Adrian Murphy and enjoy the atmosphere. But one of the big draws was to see the headline act in the post-race celebrations as “The Headsets and Bottom brackets” took to the stage for one night only. It was great to see so many non-cycling family members out to enjoy the event Kevin Monaghan took some excellent photos that captured the race and the celebrations - See the gallery on the club website to view them: http://www.lakesidewheelers.ie/photo-gallery/2011-08-summer-league-final.

Seniors Race
We also ran a Senior race with riders covering 2 laps of the race circuit. It was great to see some of our regular Senior riders on the start line and enjoying the atmosphere. The photo finish equipment was unable to give a precise result and so the judges awarded a joint 1st place to the finishers!! Well done to all the seniors who turned out to take part in the inaugural running of the “over 55” event.

Stage 8 Results
PJ Carey (Yellow cat) who has been a consistently high finisher took first place in stage 8 followed by Tom McDonagh (Blue) and Brendan Kiernan (Yellow) with overall contender Claire Malone (Blue) in 8th position. William McDonagh (Yellow) lead home the next group with a strong sprint taking him a few bike lengths clear of the group that contained many very strong riders.

George Bell, Conor Eighan and Jack Nugent were the first 3 red cat riders to finish. Eoghan Kevlihan lead home the next red category group with contained some very strong A4 riders. The other two overall title contenders Stuart Cox and Damien Shaw were marking each other very closely. In the end Robbie Kenny took the sprint off the remaining Red cat group which contained A3/2 & A1 riders.

League Results

With the results so close the decision was taken not to calculate the final points straight after the race to ensure there were no mistakes. As per rules a riders best 7 out of a possible 8 results are used in the calculation of final positions.

Blue Category:       1st Claire Malone, 2nd Oliver Bright, 3rd Nigel Scarff
Yellow Category:   1st PJ Carey, 2nd David Shaw, 3rd JP Kilmurray / Aidan Fox (Joint)
Red Category:        1st Stuart Cox, 2nd Damien Shaw, 3rd Brian Collintine
Overall:                   1st Stuart Cox, 2nd Damien Shaw, 3rd Claire Malone

Full details are contained in the attachments to this report.

Thanks:

Carmel Dolan, John Nugent, Shay O’Toole, George Bell Cathy Flynn and Joe Duffy who gave continual help throughout the league.  To all members who rode the league in the fun manner it is designed to be. We had very safe riding this year and this helps to ensure we continue to be welcomed by local drivers.  The Head Marshals and Race Organisers and all who marshalled each night. We had excellent marshal cover at every race and also thanks to Mark Monaghan for looking after the rota. Special thanks to Carmel Dolan who looked after the video finish camera at every stage of the league.  Without people like this who give up their time for other members there would not be a race league.  Thanks to the motorists in Dysart and Castletown Geoghegan for their patience each week while the races took place. Fonsie in the Village Inn who allows us take over his car park each week “Headsets and Bottom Brackets” which included club members Arthur Dempsey, Oliver Bright, Tom Carolan, Pat Weir and Enda Munnelly.
