Summer League 2014

Another summer has come and gone, which for most cyclists in the club means digging out the leg warmers, arm warmers, and anything else you care to try to warm. The end of the long evenings also marks the end of the summer league, with the final race finishing up this Thursday 28th August.
This year saw the league taking on a different format than previous years, with two defined groups, A/B and C/D. As with organising any race, no matter what format you use, handicapping such events can be a bit of a minefield, and getting it 100% right is next door to impossible. We can only try to improve the race if possible, without compromising on the safety and welfare of participants, Marshals and the road user that we impact on when staging the road race. I would like to thank the patience and support of the Dysart/Castletown-Geoghegan community who were so obliging when we were causing havoc on the roads.

I have been fortunate enough to see all the races. Not only have I been blown away by the level of fitness each and every rider has shown, but also the commitment to the standard of marshalling that has been put on display for each race, making every evening run as smooth as a well-oiled engine... well kind of! On behalf of the committee I would like to thank all the marshals who helped out over the season, as these races could not be staged without you, indeed some marshalled on more than one occasion, while others gave up or deferred work commitments to be on the side of a road with a flag and a whistle.

This year we were fortunate to have the assistance of our own version of RTE outside broadcasting, with Aidan Fox and Joe Duffy. The value to this part of the race cannot be under estimated. The quality of footage on the finish line meant we could clearly see who crossed the line first, though there were times where it was extremely close. Anyone wishing to get a still shot of any part of the race they can contact Joe himself, personally  I would like to get a shot of myself crossing the line on a bike no matter what position I came in... Ah there’s  always next year Eamo!

Setting up the league tables, putting in the points after each race unwittingly landed on the shoulders of my better half, to which I cannot thank enough, I’m still only getting terms with sending emails, and Muirna Walsh our club secretary can vouch they can be a bit dodgy at times too.

So as we draw to a close for another year, we will hopefully go out in a blaze of glory, fingers crossed it stays dry for the evening, as we have David Smith Outdoor catering supplying  the food for all, and Sandra Dolan, Darragh Caffery and company  for Musical entertainment as well. So all we need is a show of force of the members of the Lakeside Wheelers whether you race or not, to come out and have some free food, good beer and great music... oh yeh and a super finish to the league.

See You THURSDAY 28TH AUGUST - Sure what else would you do on a School night!
