posted 10 Sep 2013, 20:06 by Kevin Monaghan
On Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September Western Lakes CC hosted the Bog Week 2 day open Race. This popular race catered for A1/A2 and A3 Riders. Stage 1 was a 80km route taking in the windswept roads of Connemara. The A3's containing Lakesides newest racing member Alan Nevin, set off first with a 3 minute advantage on the chasing A1/A2 riders containing John Murray. The hard working A1/A2 group caught the A3's early on and at the 55km mark 4 managed to jump clear. Mike Ryder and Derek Joyce Galway Bay, Dave Nugent Seven Springs and John Murray held no more than 40 seconds on the bunch at any time. At the end John Murray jumped clear with 1km to go to win by 4 sec from Mike Ryder and Dave Nugent at 14 sec back. The Bunch containing Alan Nevin was led in by Liam Corcoran NRPT at 22 seconds.

The action continued on Sunday morning at 9.00am with a 5k time trial from Letterfrack to Tullycross. Both lads posted strong times to leave John 7th and Alan 20th overall heading into the last stage. Stage 3 was over 96kms with the A3'S again getting a 3 minute advantage on the stronger A1/A2 bunch. John with another rider managed to break clear of the scratch group leaving the yellow jersey behind and made it across to the A3's. It soon became apparent that a 5 man break was up the road. John Managed to get clear with 3 other riders and they were successful in catching the lead break. This in turn left John 2nd in GC on the road but with strong headwinds, the break became unorganised and eventually the yellow jersey crossed over with a few others. With about 40kms to go John and 5 riders managed to get away again. The breakaway split up a bit on the run in to the finish with John finishing 6th. Alan Nevin finished in the chasing bunch after a very strong ride. In the overall standings John received his prize for 4th and Alan finished 21st.

Well done lads on a great performance.
