Last Wednesday the club hosted its annual criterium in the centre of Mullingar and thankfully, this year the weather Gods stayed on our side. This event had to be cancelled at the last minute in 2016 due to torrential rain.
This year there were three races catering for the A4, A3 and A1/A2/A+ categories. Racing got underway on schedule at 7pm with the A4’s who raced the 1.2km circuit for 20 minutes plus 2 laps. This was an excellent race with victory going to a Lucan Road Cycling Club rider with our own Ian Lambden a very close 2nd.

The A3 race was a different type of race with two juniors going off the front from the gun. The strongest of these was Ben Walsh of the Nicolas Roche Performance Team who simply rode the field off his wheel with a display of power riding which was a pleasure to watch. His teammate and former Lakeside Wheelers member Sean Kennedy rode very well in his first criterium race and finished a very creditable 5th.

The main event of the night was the A1/A2/A+ race which got away at 8.15pm and included some of the best riders in Ireland. Current National Criterium champion, Mark Dowling (Strata Velo Revolution) was there but so too was the leader of the National Road Race series, Matteo Cigala (Aqua Blue Academy) and Damien Shaw (An Post Chainreaction). The tactics were very obvious from the start with all of these main players keeping a close eye on each other. However, they were so concerned with each other that they let Dermot Trulock (Lucan Road Cycling Club) off the leash and by the time they tried to reel him in again he had too much road on them and he powered to victory. Dowling was eventually 2nd with Cigala coming home in 3rd.

On behalf of the committee a big thanks to the local business owners, the Mullinagr Gardai, Westmeath Co. Council and the local Civil Defence crew. Without the support of all these agencies the club could not run events like this. Thanks also to the members who helped out on the night with marshaling and general organisation.
