Racing Roundup 2nd & 3rd March

On Sunday 3rd March Lakeside Wheelers were once again on the road with a team of seven heading for the Cycleways Cup in Navan. With John Murray representing us in the A1/A2 race, Henry Whitson in the A3 and no less than five riders competing in the A4. The race drew cyclists from places area far away as Limerick, Waterford, Wexford, Galway, Belfast and more. The race is viewed as one of the first big races on the cycling calendar and top riders in cycling were all out in force.

Charlie Sheridan, Brian Collentine, Matt Burke, Mickey Dan Murtagh and Mark Monaghan lined up in the A4 bunch of 90 riders, for the start of the 85km testing circuit. From the off the pace was high with our lads staying up front to cover all attacks. The hilly terrain took its toll on many riders with the bunch whittled down to some forty riders after the last 6km climb of the day. The finish came down to a bunch sprint with Brian Collentine, Matt Burke and Mark Monaghan in the thick of the action. Mark Monaghan finished in a well-deserved 10th place.

Well done also to fellow Wheeler Damien Shaw who took second in the A1/A2 race, racing in the colours of Aqua Blue. Well done lads all the winter training has paid off. Thanks to Billy Cunnane & Colm Lynch for doing race support on the Day.

Summerhill Race Saturday 2nd March
The previous day Lakeside Wheelers had a team of 5 in Summerhill Co Meath for their annual open race. First race off on the day was the Dublin Wheelers GP. We were represented in A4 by Charlie Sheridan, Moss Keane and Mickey Hynes. The race was 2 laps of a 22km lumpy circuit. The lads acquitted themselves very well getting into breaks but the bunch worked well and brought back all attempts. The finish came down to a bunch sprint with Ciaran Harte from our neighbouring club Shannonside taking the win. Our lads finished in the bunch with Charlie Sheridan taking a very creditable 8th spot.

Second race of the day was the Ian Gallagher Memorial Race. We were represented in A3 by Damien O'Brien and Colm Lynch. A field of 90 riders lined up for a testing 3 laps of a 22km circuit. From the off the pace was hot with our lads staying in the thick of the action. Again no breaks managed to get clear and the race came down to a sprint with our lads finishing in the bunch. Well done to Colm Lynch who was competing in his first A3 race.

Tune in next week for a race report next week from Clonard and Newbridge.
