Last Saturday up to 50 of Leinster’s best youth cyclists attended Lakeside Wheelers’ clubhouse in Mullingar for a training day. This major event was organised by the Leinster Youth branch with assistance from Lakeside Wheelers’ youth mentors and supervsiors.

Lakeside Wheelers’ youth representative, Camillus Farrell, stated that the day was a great success for everybody and that the club were honoured to host the visitors who came from several different clubs across the province. Leinster Youth committee member and Lakeside Wheelers member, Philip Wade, stated that clubs capable of staging such an event to cater for these numbers are few and far between. Philip also commended the organisers from Lakeside Wheelers who put in many hours of preparation to make this day possible and thanked the club for their cooperation.

The main aim of the day was to put the young guns through their paces on Wattbike testing sessions and this proved to be a very worthwhile exercise with some very impressive results across all age categories. There was also a series of workshops to teach bike maintenance and mechanical repairs while on the road which are of utmost importance for every cyclist, young and “older”!

The results of the wattbike tests will be used as selection criteria for Academy selection and training which will be done at a further training weekend in Castlebar next month. In all, there were 27 participants with five members from Lakeside Wheelers taking part. These were Caoimhe O’Brien, Leo Gunning, Aaron Wade, Conor N Farrell and Conor T. Farrell. All Wheelers acquitted themselves very well and enjoyed the experience.

This was an excellent showcase day for Lakeside Wheelers so, thanks to Camillus Farrell, Damien O’Brien, Eamon Hogan, Tommy Hogan and Mossie Keane for all your hard work. Special word of thanks must go to our neighbours in the Midland Tri Club for assisting with the Wattbike set-up.
