On Saturday last 1st of October a group of Wheelers attended a Duathlon (Run-Cycle-Run) in Lilliput adventure Centre on the shores of Lough Ennell. This was a fun duathlon in aid of the very worthy cause of Barnardos.

In damp but mild conditions the field of approx. 90 participants were set on their way at high noon. First up was a two lap run totalling 4.5km. with athletes of different levels taking part the “Fun” element went out window after about 10 meters of the run complete with our own Dave Fagan (fresh from his 9th place in the World Duathlon Championships in Gijon Spain) setting a fast pace on the run.

It was on from the run to the first transition to get out onto the bike. The wheelers all excelled in this aspect of the event and where we all started to claw back the time we lost to the stronger runners in the field.   The bike section took us out of Lilliput centre to Dysart and on to the familiar race route climb & into Castletown-Geoghan where we took a left midway through the village and back around to Lilliput completing the 16km circuit.

It was then on to the second transition and to see how we all would handle the jelly legs & the final 2.25km lap of the run course!  All wheelers completed the course in very respectable times, none more so than Dave Fagan who won the event in a time of 49mins. Well done also to Paula Murray who was first lady home & Aidan Daly who was 1st male over 40.

Well done to all the Wheelers who took part, there are too many to name & I’m afraid I’d leave someone out. For many of us who took part this was our first attempt at this kind of event and everybody seemed to enjoy it.

A big congrats to Pamela & Sandra Greville who undertook the organisation of this event in aid of Barnados and they were ably assisted by Frankie Wright and all the staff of Lilliput Adventure centre. Well done to all the marshals who stood out in the wet conditions to keep all the participants safe. A total of €3000 was raised on the day.
