After the hugely successful “An Evening with Sean Kelly” on Friday night members of the club had the chance to cycle with the man himself on Saturday morning. Over sixty brave souls took up this opportunity on a bitterly cold morning thankfully the rain that had battered the country on Friday had disappeared.

The decision was to split the assembled Wheelers into two large groups with approximately 30 in each and stay on the new N52 to take us to Tyrellspass and back. The ‘C’ & ‘D’ group were first to take leave of the ORS with everybody getting the chance to cycle alongside Sean. The ‘A’ & ‘B’ group soon followed and we all arrived at Tyrrellspass castle at the same time where we were treated to some excellent tea, coffee & scones. Yet again Sean posed for more photographs and signed many more autographs.

He then joined the a & b groups for the trip back home into the strong headwind, as with the norm the gallop for home began in earnest with 5km to go and Sean wasn’t to found wanting but I think he may followed the wrong wheel in the sprint as we reached the ORS or maybe it was because we didn’t tell him where the finish line was a few of us can now say that we beat Sean Kelly in a Sprint!! Thanks to the management of Tyrrellspass castle for looking after us so well on Saturday, It can’t have been easy to deal with sixty plus hungry cyclist arriving at the same time!
