With some temporary respite from the stormy weather of late it was no surprise to see a big crowd gathered for the annual “Turkey Trot” on Sunday 27th December.

The early start wasn’t enough to deter over 60 hardy Wheelers who were all set to go from the Clubhouse at 9.30am. The “Turkey Trot” is a very popular and social spin designed to help get the legs back into cycling after some overindulgence at the festive dinner table. The usual format is to take a leisurely route to a destination near Mullingar for some coffee, mince pies and a good old fashioned chat. This year was no different and saw the groups break off into safe numbers before heading directly out the N52 to Tyrellspass and on to the beautiful surroundings of New Forest golf club.  mazingly the sun came out en route which made the day all the more enjoyable and on arrival the staff at New Forest met the cyclists with some fabulous refreshments and pastries.

One of the highlights to this year’s spin was the presence of some of our junior members who are clearly benefiting from the Saturday morning training sessions. One or two “semi-retired” members also made a return for this festive spin so it was great to see Ken Greene, Ronan McNamara, Louise McCarra and even our esteemed Chairman, Joe Duffy, back in the saddle.

Following the coffee, pastries and chat it was time to return to base so well done to all and hopefully we will see everybody throughout the coming year.

As a footnote: the regular club spins are often victim to what cyclists call the “puncture fairy” but last Sunday was slightly different. On returning to her car, one member was delighted to find that in her absence, two very helpful Wheelers had not only spotted that her car wheel was flat but had actually gone and replaced the wheel with one of their own spares. Now that’s real club spirit so big thanks and well done to Philip Wade and Ian Lambden.
