The merits of hiring a coach to run training and development programmes have often been discussed by Lakeside Wheelers members at various coffee stops and meetings. Over the years several members have, and with some success, taken on the role of “coach” but without formal training they relied on the internet and books for information and some have actually gone on to complete Cycling Ireland coaching courses.
In an attempt to move this concept to the next level, the club organised a Foundation level coaching night in the clubhouse last Monday. This was facilitated by Paddy Doran who is a recognised and very successful cycling coach and who has delivered several training days for us in the past. Indeed he is currently actively working in conjunction with Eoghan Kevlihan who is looking after the racing programme for this year.

Sixteen eager Wheelers gathered in a “chilly” clubhouse to participate in part one of this Foundation level course which is the first level of the Cycling Ireland Coaching Pathway. This course is, aimed at people new to coaching and those wishing to start on the cycling coaching ladder. The course covers all the basics of cycling coaching and provides participants with a good introduction to the principles of coaching and training. It will provide all the knowledge and information needed to coach cyclists at the developmental stages of the cyclist pathway so hopefully it will also give Lakeside Wheelers a good coaching resource for the coming years.

Paddy stated after the course that he plans to complete the second module of this course in a few weeks so keep an eye on texts and emails for this date.
