Underage Moutain Biking Outing to Wicklow

posted 25 Oct 2010, 11:55 by Kevin Monaghan
On Saturday the LSW youth section travelled to Ballinastoe, Co. Wicklow to undertake the much anticipated Mountain Bike Day. Mother Nature was kind to us as we had a fantastic, crisp and sunny autumn day for the event. Craig Sterrett and Paul Crowley joined the outing to provide much appreciated tuition in Mountain Bike skills and to guide the group safely through the complex maze of purpose built trails at Ballinastoe.
Following arrival the youths were given a thorough explanation of the challenges particular to mountain biking before commencing the day’s fun with a gentle circuit on the lower trail. This served as a valuable introduction and familiarization to the world of mountain biking. Next the group ascended into the mountain, undertaking various trails along the way. Before each trail Craig briefed the youths on what lay ahead before leading them, at a controlled pace, through the trail sections.
It took close to 2 hours to reach the top of the trail, but once there the views of south Wicklow, Roundwood and the Irish Sea were spectacular. The descent took us through 5 different trails each with unique features to test the cyclist skills. The trails varied from fast flowing forest single trails to open hillside technical trails. The cycle lasted 3.5 hours and everyone was in agreement that the day was very enjoyable and educational for all involved.
We would like to thank Craig and Paul for their help and Outdoor Escape for kindly donating some very useful spare parts for the event. We welcomed Cian Humphries for his first outing with Lakeside Wheelers and he proved that he was more than capable of handling the rigours of mountain biking.
Youths: Ciara Reynolds, Ryan Sheridan, Evan & Luke Eivers, Shane Hughes, Eoin Ashe, Eoin Lynam, Robert Shaw and Cian Humphries.
