Track Gold for Sarah

posted 5 Aug 2011, 01:35 by Kevin Monaghan
The Omnium, Team Sprint and Team Persuit track championships were held in Sundrive last weekend and unfortunately Lakeside Wheelers do not have enough female riders to enter a full team. Sarah Piner was asked to ride with the Cunga Pro team set up by David O’Loughlin to assist riders in gaining experience towards the Olympic games 2012.

The female riders on the team, Caroline Ryan and Sinead Jennings, are arguably the best Ireland has to offer at International level. In particular Caroline Ryan who has proved herself at the highest level, finishing just outside the medals for the Individual Persuit. At present there is no Cycling Ireland funding for Caroline which is where the Cunga squad have stepped in helping Caroline to race in the World Cups.
The team coach is Brian Nugent and he was on hand on Sunday to organise the team, choose appropriate gearing and decide who is to ride on the front and when.

“I was very happy to be asked to race with Caroline and Sinead, we made a really strong team. It was our first time riding in a persuit together and it takes a bit of getting used to the time trial bars on the track bike. We worked really well together and rode a good race, we are keen to race again to see if we can better our time” - Sarah

The next big race in Ireland on the track is the National Championships at the start of September so hopefully we will have a couple of wheelers racing!
