Tour Of The lakes A Great Success Despite the Weather

posted 19 Jul 2010, 03:45 by Kevin Monaghan

Last Sunday we staged the 2010 Tour of the Lakes which, is the main event of the Wheelers’ leisure calendar, and despite the poor weather it was fantastic to see over 120 riders sign on. However, to a man and woman everybody seemed to enjoy the spin and there was very positive feedback in support of the new format. The introduction of a hot pasta meal at the end went down especially well as did the change of route and the idea to roll out groups of similar ability as opposed to one large peloton.

At the half way stage in Streete Community Centre there were plenty of weary and sodden bodies but great credit is due to all participants for keeping their spirits up in such horrible conditions. As with most of the leisure tours there were many riders venturing out on distances never before attempted and it was with some trepidation that several riders departed Streete heading for the hills of Laeney and the infamous “Piggery”. Nevertheless they all made it back to base and with the exception of one small slip, thankfully there were no accidents.  As mentioned earlier, we decided this year to provide a hot meal on completion of the tour and thanks to Noel Kennedy and his team in Oscars Restaurant,  Mullingar, we were treated to five star standards. The committee would also like to thank Mr. James Brady of Streete Parish Park for his invaluable assistance and Mullingar Rugby club. Many thanks also to the racing team who looked after driving, marshalling and the half-way food stop in return for the leisure cyclists taking care of their recent racing exploits. Finally, to Tom Carloan and Conor Isdale, take a bow lads for a job well done and roll on TOL, 2011.
