I had a chat with Claire Malone this week, she has had a great year and competed in a variety of events from criterium racing to the An Post challenge in Waterford…

Claire when did you join the Wheelers and start cycling?
I did the Maracycle before I joined the Wheelers in 1992 and didn’t cycle too much after that. Then I signed up for the Enniskillen to Sligo spin in 2004, Carmel Buckley and I were training for it together. I saw an advert in the paper for people to join Lakeside Wheelers and came down to the dog track to meet them!

What events did you do this year?
Lots this year, Waterford An Post which was really tough, the club league of course, the criterium race for club members around town which was great fun, Tri-Athlone - this was a great race the atmosphere was fantastic.

What has been your biggest cycling achievement?
The Triathlon in Athlone was a big achievement, it was my second tri. I was really happy with the time I did and the day in general was good, a few of us from the club went together and the atmosphere around the town was great.

And of course third in the race league!
Yes I was very happy with that, it would be nice to have some more people racing in the blue category next year too!!

Did you use any tactics to take third overall?
Well I guess so, I went as hard as I could each week to stay away from the groups behind and away from Damien and Stuart of course. That worked well when I finished second in one of the races, so yes the tactics were race as hard as possible.

So you were racing Damien and Stuey?
Yes we were well aware of them chasing hard so we were racing hard to stay away from them! – And when we did it was great!!

Any plans for next year?
Well I’d love to do a sportive in the sunshine somewhere! Some more triathlon as Athlone was a success. The An Post series would be a goal for me, they are a real challenge. The race league again of course!!

Lastly, your cycling heroes?
Sean Kelly and from the club Sarah and Wendy!

Thank you Claire!
