The club celebrated in style on Friday May 20th with the “Suits and Sparkles” 40th anniversary dinner in the Mullingar Park Hotel. With over 220 guests in attendance, this will surely go down as the most successful social event the club has ever hosted.

There was no shortage of glamour as club members, their friends and families came out to party and celebrate this major milestone in the history of the club. They were joined on the night by Cycling Ireland CEO, Geoff Liffey, and President, Ciaran McKenna, local TD Peter Burke, An Post Chainreaction Sean Kelly rider and honorary member of Lakeside Wheelers, Damien Shaw and World Track cycling champion, Martyn Irvine.

Chairman of Lakeside Wheelers, Joe Duffy opened the night with a short but detailed speech outlining the progress and success of the club over the four decades since 1976. Former club member Fr. Martin Queenan came from England especially for the event and was kind enough to say grace before meals. Following dinner, the President of Cycling Ireland, Ciaran McKenna spoke about how the club was held in very high regard by the federation stating that it is an example of how a good club should be run. Then, club PRO Shay O’Toole was joined on stage by Damien Shaw who spoke about his move to the professional ranks and his hopes for the 2016 An Post Ras. This was followed by an interview with Martyn Irvine who gave a very honest and frank account of his entire career which afforded all those present an interesting insight into how he first started cycling and then the glory years that followed.

With the formalities out of the way it was time for the dancing to begin and with the excellent “White Diamond” providing the beats, the floor was soon full of revellers. That’s how it stayed into the very small hours of the morning and so, a great night’s celebration was wrapped up.

On behalf of all Wheelers, a big thank you is due to to the organising committee of Geraldine Kennedy, Cathy O’Toole, Louise McCarra, Carmel Buckley and Jack Nugent who put a lot of hard work and time into making this evening the success it was. Thanks also to Kevin Monaghan for the excellent photo display and videos which were on show throughout the night. To the management and staff of the Mullingar Park Hotel, thank you for a lovely meal and great facilities. Thanks to the following for donating spot prizes for the “seat hunt”: Oscar’s Restaurant, Fagan’s Office Supplies, Outdoor Escape, Tri and Run, Declan Smith Gas Services, Alannah Rose Jewellers, Ballycastle Cycling Club, Mulberry Lane, Reyno's Café, Dunne and Nugent Curtains and Blindsa and the Lakeside Wheelers Committee

Finally, thanks to all of you who attended and made the evening, especially non-members, people from neighbouring clubs and our two Italian friends, Alex and Pietro, your support is greatly appreciated.
