Once again, the annual edition of the Spring Spin Cycles has exceeded previous records with North Westmeath Hospice benefiting to the tune of a massive €45,015.  This is the sixth year of the Spring Spin Cycles and this year’s fundraising effort brings the total amount raised to date to €275,000 a major achievement given that the event started at the beginning of the economic downturn in 2008 and has succeeded in increasing the amount raised each year since then, despite the year-on-year deepening of the economic crisis.

Thanks to the huge effort put in by all concerned in the 2013 edition of Spring Spin, the organising committee were in the happy position to present Chairman of North Westmeath Hospice, John Shaw with the biggest cheque to date, bringing this year's event formally to a conclusion.
The 2013 Spring Spin Cycles took place over two weekends back in April, the Family Cycle on Sunday 14th and the Sligo cycle challenge the following weekend.  Both events were extremely well supported with over a hundred participants for the 20km Family cycle and a similar number tackling the 260km round-trip challenge from The Downs to Sligo and back.
On Thursday evening last (14th June) the organising committee presented a cheque for €45,015 to the North Westmeath Hospice, the proceeds of a huge fundraising effort by the participants in this years cycle events for this very worthy cause.  In accepting the cheque, John Shaw, representing the Hospice, expressed his gratitude for the phenomenal sum and thanked the organising committee, participants, those who gave so generously of their time in helping organise the events and those who contributed so generously to the fundraising effort, especially in such tough financial circumstances.

As always, the success of the Spring Spin cycles is due to the financial support of sponsors and cyclists' fundraising efforts as well as the practical help provided by a whole host of support personnel who volunteered their time over both weekends to help out in the many tasks that go to make up events such as this.  The organising committee would like to express its thanks and appreciation for the support and assistance provided by so many groups and individuals without whom the cycle events would not have been the huge success that they were. This includes the Gardaí, Civil Defence, Order Of Malta, Lakeside Wheelers members, Motor Cycle crew, vehicle providers and drivers, mechanics, members of The Downs and Annaduff GAA clubs, those who provided the catering and kept the cyclists nourished along their journey, to David Mitchell for all his hard work on the jersey, those who sponsored the jerseys and all those who generously provided spot-prizes.
Not forgetting of course the participants themselves, who cycled in the two events and all those individuals, businesses and organisations who sponsored them.  Without cyclists we wouldn't have an event.
