Spring Spin - From the Group 4 Perspective

With the majority of club members away with the Spring Spin cycle to Sligo it was a quiet weekend around Mullingar on Sunday April 21st last but I believe that there was still a substantial group Wheelers congregated in the ORS car park. Yours truly was one of those said people on the spring spin, and what a spin it was. Glorious sunshine greeted the large numbers on arrival to The Downs GAA. As we took our leave from HQ in group four it was clear that we were in for a very enjoyable first leg of the two day trip as we had a slight cross-tailwind helping us along our merry way.

Spirits were high as we rolled along towards our tea stop making Annaduff in record time (2hrs Flat!). After a pleasant stop and refuel with plenty of soup, sandwiches and goodies on offer, we were once again back on the bikes to take on the second part of the days challenge. The Curlew Mountains were no match for this group of mountain goats and before long we met the rest of the cyclists for the Garda escort to the outskirts of Sligo, where we took leave of our escort and the run for home began. Before long we reached our destination of the beautiful Clarion hotel where the re-hydration took place in earnest!

Sunday morning arrived very quickly for some of us, and the weather wasn’t the only thing that looked a little rough as we rolled out of Sligo at half ten. With sore heads and tired bodies the jovial spirits of the previous days spin seemed like a distant memory as we climbed out of Sligo with a strong headwind but thankfully we avoided the downpour of rain the greeted the groups ahead of us (for the second year running!) Eventually as we crested the Curlew Mountains the wind seemed to swing around to the tailwind we had been promised by Jean Byrne and we headed for tea stop in Annaduff, again we were treated like kings as we tucked into all the goodies on offer. Soon again we were on the road for home and the miles slipped by quietly and quickly and soon we were heading up Col de Bunbrosna but this time as a group  we decided to ride to the Downs as one complete unit instead of the usual hammer fest. (Thank God!)
Well done to all who took part over the weekend and a special thank you to the support crew for all their help.
