With the season now in full swing there are several sportives on every weekend for the leisure riders. These events provide an excellent opportunity to get good mileage in on different roads in mostly scenic areas of the country.
If travelling a distance to participate in any of these is not your preferred option then worry not, as there are lots to choose from closer to home. In the next few weeks you will be spoilt for choice in the Midlands with three very good sportives taking place. Here's a flavour of what's on in the midlands area in May...

Greene Farm Foods Charity Sportive:

With only three weeks to go until the Greene Farm Foods Charity Sportive and Fun Run takes place on Sunday, May 1st, the organising committee are now at full tilt trying to get everything right for the big day.
It is hoped that there will be a big turnout for this event which is supporting three very worthwhile charity organisations. These are, Sightsavers, the international charity which fights avoidable blindness and promotes equal opportunities for visually impaired people, Aware, the Irish support group for people who experience depression or bipolar disorder and their concerned loved ones and, from a local perspective, the North Westmeath Hospice, which, since 1994 has been providing quality palliative care free of charge to the people of north Westmeath.

Planning for this event has been ongoing since early this year and a great days cycling and running is ensured. Multyfarnham Community Centre is the base for this event and will open for sign-on at 8am. The cycle will cater for all abilities with two routes tracing a very scenic track around north Westmeath and beyond. At 9am the 130km spin will depart and head in the direction of Coole, Granard and Ballinagh before turning for Aughnacliffe and home via Edgeworthstown and Lisryan. The 60km spin will depart at 11am and follow a trail to Granard, Finea and home via Castlepollard. Both spins will have full mechanical back-up and stops for refreshments with hot meals served on completion.

At 1pm there will be a 5km Fun Run around the Multyfarnham area which should finish as the last of the cyclists return so it is hoped that there will be good party atmosphere in the village for the evening.
Registration for this event is online and places are filling fast so be prepared and get signed up NOW!

Midlands Meander
This Audax Ireland accredited event will be staged on Saturday, April 23rd and will start in Multyfarnham. As the name indicates, it is a 200km spin through the midlands taking in some very scenic roads around Cavan, Longford and of course, Westmeath. Start time is 8am and further info can be got by contacting organiser, Conor Isdell at or

Alan Moran Memorial Sportive
This event which is scheduled for Saturday, May 7th is being organised by the family and friends of former Lakeside Wheelers member Alan Moran, who passed away very suddenly in 2015. This memorial/charity event is aiming to raise much needed funds to supply defibrillators and associated training for the Mullingar and Edenderry areas so please support if possible. There will be two routes (40km and 90km) available and both will include food and water stops. Sign-on at St Mary’s School Edenderry will be open from 8am with the first group scheduled to depart at 10am. More details are available on the event Facebook page.

Tour of the Heartlands
This event will be familiar to many Wheelers as it is the annual sportive of our neighbouring club, Shannonside. The Tour of the Heartlands on Sunday, May 8th is always a very enjoyable 100km spin around the Westmeath, Roscommon, Galway and Offaly countryside. Sign-on will open at the Bounty Bar attached to the Buccanneers rugby on Coosan Road at 8am with further details of routes etc available at
