There was great excitement within the junior ranks last week with the news that Sean Kennedy has been selected to ride for the Nicolas Roche Performance Team for the coming season. This is a fantastic opportunity for Sean who has gone from strength to strength since he commenced racing two years ago. He progressed very quickly and made his presence felt in the junior scene almost immediately winning several races last year. Amongst these was a special victory at his home GP in Multyfarnham last summer which he followed up with a 1st place at the National Junior Championships.

The Nicolas Roche Performance Team (NRPT) was established to develop up and coming young Irish riders and help them make the transition from junior status to U23 and possibly, even the professional ranks. The team is managed by Philip Finegan, a former Irish International cyclist with Nicolas Roche as team principal and mentor. Nicolas Roche is one of Ireland’s top professional cyclists and will ply his trade in the coming season with his new team, BMC Racing having recently departed from Team Sky.

Sean applied for one of the coveted positions on the NRPT earlier this year when the team advertised that they were taking on new riders. Following a rigorous training camp and interview process he finally received the call in recent days that he was in line for selection if he was still interested. Before agreeing to join the NRPT Sean and his dad Noel, who is also a keen cyclist, sought advice from various sources and then decided the offer was too good to pass up. Being part of this advanced set up means that Sean will no longer ride in the colours of Lakeside Wheelers but his selection is definitely a significant endorsement of the hard work and commitment for the dedicated mentors involved in the Lakeside Wheelers youth programme. The NRPT programme will see the team and selected riders attend several international races as well as all of the top events at home including the Junior Tour and National Championships.

On behalf of everybody at Lakeside Wheelers, well done and best of luck to Sean for the coming season.
