Roads Less Travelled- B Group Notes

The weather was kind and the wind was light which signalled picking a a route that we don't often take,  heading northwards. With our father and son visitors, Tom and Will McDonagh from Tasmania we decided that a true taste of some of Westmeath's country roads was in order. Also with a sizeable contingent heading to Dungarvan in 3 weeks for the An Post Sean Kelly Tour a hilly route was also required. Joe Duffy obliged and took another crew of B's on a less hilly route with about 10 cyclists.

I took the remaining 14 out via some regular roads to Killucan, Raharney on onto Collinstown. From there we detoured via "grass down the middle" roads with a couple of climbs to Whitehall that quite a few didn't know existed. We tipped on in to Castlepollard for a well deserved coffee and muffin and general chit chat.

Enquiries were made as to the return route hoping for something nice and flat. Alas they were disappointed. We took scenic roads in via Gilliardstown, Clonkill to Crazy Corner and then to Rathconnell Hill and back to the ORS. The Tassie Boys kept up no problem but I soon realised that they had no option as they hadn't a clue how to get home if they got dropped !! A slightly shorter route in mileage but the up and down made up for it. Another great day on the bike.
