The racing season is only weeks away now and for those interested in this discipline it is now time to be looking at the calendar and picking out the races which you hope to attend. Important new developments around the grading system for open racers were released this week by Cycling Ireland and details are available on the federation’s website. The dates for our own racing events are, Wednesday, June 15th, Criterium and Sunday, July 17th, Mullingar GP. More details on these two events will be posted closer to the actual dates. If anyone is interested in assisting with sponsorship of these events please contact club race directors, Joe Duffy or Shay O’Toole.

Such is the popularity of the sportive scene, the season is now almost on a par with racing and these events can provide some very worthwhile training for the racers as they will get long endurance miles with tough climbing. One of the first sportives of the year takes place in Westport on Saturday March 12th. It looks like there will be a contingent from the club travelling to this event which has a 122km or a 70km option with both routes covering some extremely scenic terrain including Croagh Patrick, Killary Fjord, Doolough Valley and the Sheffry mountain climb. Following this event there will be absolutely no excuses as there will be a sportive on somewhere every weekend. There will obviously be more details closer to the date but don’t forget to mark Sunday, June 12th as the date of our own Tour of the Lakes.
