Old Rail Trail is Officially Open

As of Sunday 18th October the long awaited Greenway is now officially open. However, for many weeks now several Wheelers and members of the general public have been getting sneak previews as they cycled in between and around the contractors who were busy putting the finishing touches to this fabulous amenity.

The Greenway is, as you all know, the new bike route which has been constructed on the old Mullingar to Athlone rail line. It is 44km in length and as Wheeler, and Director of Services at Westmeath Co. Council, Mr. Barry Kehoe, outlined at the official opening ceremony, everybody is welcome to cycle it free of charge. The big advantage is the complete absence of cars and trucks but this new trail is also very scenic with beautiful stone bridges and wide open countryside to enjoy. The obligatory coffee stop is also possible with several options in Moate, Athlone and of course, Mullingar on your return.

An Taoiseach, Mr. Enda Kenny performed the official opening and in his address he rightly praised the work of everybody who made this facility possible.Lakeside Wheelers were well represented at this ceremony and as individuals, will hopefully get many years of traffic-free cycling on this new route. Due to the size of our groups  we will not be using it for organised club rides but it is a facility that will enable riders of all abilities to get in extra spins, especially with good lights, now as the evenings are shorter.

Finally, it was great to see our fellow clubman and current Irish National Road Race champion, Damien Shaw, presenting An Taoiseach who is known to be a cycling fan,  with one of his National Champions Team Asea jerseys.

All members of Lakeside Wheelers would like to say a big thank you and congratulations to the staff at Westmeath Co. Council for their involvement in making this fantastic initiative a reality.
