Last Sunday Lakeside Wheelers organised the first event of the new Midland Cyclo-Cross (CX) league and thanks to the Indian summer and some great organisation, it was a huge success.

For the last number of weeks Sonja Mahoney, Roy Carey, Darragh Caffery and Steve Franzoni have been busy working to get this new venture up and running. Key to the organisation was the cooperation of Westmeath Co. Council which allowed the club access to the old Marlinstown landfill site. Getting permission to use this amazing facility is a project which has been running in the background for some time now so it was great to get an actual event in there to see exactly how it would work. So, its not just restaurants and shops that operate “pop-up” style as Lakeside Wheelers must now be the first club in the country to have a pop-up off-road cycling track!

The event itself started at 10 am with the kids races and was followed by a couple of senior events. One of these was the “Have-a-Go” race which was aimed at beginners, those who are not exactly serious about it or those who don’t have a specific CX bike...yet. This is standard at all of the Lakeside promoted CX races to date and has always proven to be a big success. Following this the main event was run off on a challenging but fair circuit which incorporated the naturally sloping and rugged terrain which this facility has in spades and which is perfect for CX racing.
