Lakeside Wheelers Gathering 2013

posted 13 May 2013, 14:16 by Kevin Monaghan
Lakeside Wheelers’ contribution to The Gathering 2013 kicks off next Friday, May 17th, when we welcome seventeen visitors to Mullingar for a weekend of cycling, sightseeing and “craic”.

The visitors, nine Belgians and eight Italians are travelling here as a result of a chance encounter with some Wheelers who went to Belgium for the Tour of Flanders Sportive in 2011. This led to a friendship and links were fostered between the three clubs, Velo Club Oggiono which is near Lake Como in northern Italy, Trudy’s Cycling Club, Gerrardsbergen in Belgium and our own Lakeside Wheelers. As a result, eight Wheelers travelled to the Lake Como region in Italy last September for the Tour of Lombardy, or as it is more commonly known, The Tour of the Falling Leaves and met up once more with our new found friends. During this trip an invitation was issued to the Italians and Belgians to come to Mullingar and sample what Westmeath has to offer in terms of cycling and entertainment.

So, after much planning, we are all set to host our own version of “The Gathering” (we are not in receipt of any Government funding) and to mark the occasion we are holding a Ceili night in Caffery’s Bar, Mount St. on Saturday May 18th commencing at 9.30pm. We would encourage all members to come along to this free event to meet and greet the visitors as it is a fantastic opportunity for our club to forge links with other cyclists from two countries which would be recognised as the strongholds of European cycling. More information regarding the visit will be forwarded via text and email.
