Last weekend Lakeside Wheelers, celebrated “The Gathering 2013” as we played host to seventeen members of two cycling clubs from Italy and Belgium. The connection between these three clubs was forged two years ago when several members from Lakeside Wheelers travelled to the Flanders region in Belgium to participate in the sportive that runs in tandem with the famous professional cycle race known as the Tour of Flanders.

At a dinner last Friday night in the Annebroook House Hotel, the President of the Velo Club Oggiono from Italy, Daniele Fumagalli, presented flags to Lakeside Wheelers President Mick Reynolds and Steven Chavatte of De Trudy’s Cycling Club, Gerrardsbergen in Belgium to formally mark the triangulation of the three clubs.

Throughout the weekend the Wheelers entertained their visitors around the Mullingar area taking in some local attractions which were very well received. On Friday we took them on a short cycle which included a quick visit to a traditional country pub, Willies in Tyrrellspass whilst on Saturday on a slightly longer spin we stopped off at Locke’s Distillery in Killbeggan for coffee and a “small one” to let them taste the prized produce. On Sunday, the visitors and several members of Lakeside Wheelers boarded a bus for Oldcastle to watch the first stage of the An Post Rás going up the hill at Loughcrew Gardens.

Allesandro Corte of Italy who is also an accomplished drummer stated that it was an amazing experience for him to witness a traditional Irish music festival.

The organisers of the Lakeside Wheelers Gathering 2013, John Nugent, Shay O’Toole, Robbie Kenny and Charlie Sheridan would like to thank all members who turned out for the cycle and club social on Saturday and also the staff and management of Annebrook House Hotel, Caffery’s Bar, Oscars Restaurant and BB Awards, Knockdrin who all contributed to making this project such a huge success. We are already looking forward to the next meeting with our new friends but whether it is going to be in the Lake Como region of northern Italy, Belgium or Ireland is still undecided.
