Lakeside Wheelers Mullingar were once again recognised as one of the best sporting clubs in the country when they scooped the prestigious, “Club of the Year” award at the Cycling Ireland annual awards dinner last Saturday night.
The event was held in the Crowne Plaza hotel in Santry and was attended by a host of Ireland’s top cycling personalities.
In opening the evening’s proceedings, Cycling Ireland President, Mr Denis Toomey, gave a comprehensive account of how the sport has progressed here throughout 2014, culminating with three spectacular stages of the Giro d’Italia, which were staged in Ireland last May. Mr Toomey went on to reveal that Cycling Ireland membership now exceeds 23,000, which he believes, leaves the sport here in a very healthy state. This view was further stressed by the great Seán Kelly, who, when interviewed, stated that there is a very exciting crop of juniors now in training and he believes that some of them will certainly go on to shine at international level in the future.

Following the formal speeches, the main awards were presented and it was with great excitement that Lakeside Wheelers’ Chairman, Mick Reynolds and club member, Shay O’Toole awaited the outcome of the “Best Club” category. The huge cheer that greeted the announcement of Lakeside Wheelers winning Club of the Year was an indication of just how much the local club is regarded within the Irish cycling fraternity.

This is Wheelers’ third time to win this award and the second in five years as they last claimed it in 2009. It is however, no accident, as the committee and members are constantly working to promote cycling at all codes and levels in and around the greater Mullingar area. Indeed, this year they were instrumental in promoting cycling at a national/international level when they hosted the Irish Cycling Championships in Rochfortbridge and Multyfarnham resulting in several thousand cycling enthusiasts congregating here to see top professional riders including Daniel Martin competing on our doorstep. The club also staged a round of the Irish Para-Cycling championships last summer and on the leisure front, the clubs annual “Tour of the Lakes” is now one of Ireland’s most popular sportives.

So, to all Lakeside Wheelers members, take a well deserved bow as you are once again, top of the cycling ladder in Ireland.  Anyone wishing to become involved in cycling in the Mullingar area can contact any club member for more information.
