Ken Berry Brings Markievicz Cup Back to Mullingar

posted 30 May 2011, 15:52 by Kevin Monaghan
We had our first one day race win of the year thanks to a brave ride from Ken Berry in Sligo at the weekend. The Markievicz cup has an impressive list of past winners including Irish International David O’Loughlin, our own Kevin Monaghan back in 1987 and now Ken Berry in 2011.
Ken was in a small break group of four from early on in the race, the peloton behind was chasing hard with the likes of Mark Kiernan (multiple Ras finisher) and our own Stuart Cox eager for the win.

The small break group rode extremely well considering the course was a tough one,  including a climb up to the finish, 80km of up and overs with the A1 A2 bunch breathing down you neck!
Stuey explained how the race went from the main bunch “as soon as I knew Ken was in the break I sat up and watched the other race contenders. I couldn’t believe they stayed away the group was chasing so hard. The time gap was falling but not fast enough, it must have been really lonely up that climb each time and nowhere to hide – a serious ride by Ken Well done!”

Kens break group of four was reduced to three coming into the last lap and in a move similar to that of Kevin Monaghan back in 1987, Ken made a jump up the drag 200 metres from the line and took the win.
I’m sure Ken will be upgraded to the A3 category soon as he has accumulated quite a few points over the first few months of the season.

Ken Berry receives the Countess Markievicz Cup after his fine win in Sligo on Sunday.
