Junior Racing

Mark Eivers contacted me recently to tell me about our youth racing team who attended their first ever race outside of Mullingar. Last Tuesday week they travelled to Waterstown Park in Palmerstown which, Mark assures me is a beautiful public park with a perfect 2.1km tarmac circuit for racing.

The Wheelers were represented by Evan Eivers u12, Cathal Tone u14 with Dylan Kennedy and Luke Eivers u16. The race was mixed and handicapped with a total of twenty boys and girls competing. Unfortunately just as racing was commencing the rain gods appeared and the riders were hampered by torrential showers and wind throughout the entire race. However the young Wheelers showed true determination and character to battle on and even managed podium positions.

Despite a slight fall in the last lap Evan crossed the line in a very creditable 2nd place. Cathal also had misfortune with a puncture as he was sprinting for the finish but still came home in 4th. In the u16 race Luke and Dylan were up against two all Ireland champions and showed fabulous spirit to come home 3rd and 4th respectively. Make no mistake this was a terrific performance and these lads really did the club proud.

The lads wanted it mentioned that they owe a huge thank you to Mick, Robbie and Michelle for their training in recent weeks and to Steve for his tactical and mechanical back up. Well done boys and keep up the good work. Mark advised me that the next youth event is the All Ireland Youth Championships in Coalisland, Co. Tyrone on August 28th and 29th.

If any parents are interested in attending with their kids could they please fill out the application at http://www.cyclingireland.ie/ulster/road/new/2010-all-ireland-youth-championships.asp or alternatively give Mick (0861950453) or Robbie (0868538140) a call.
