Since the committee asked riders to fit a rear mudguard for spins until March the weather has been very kind to us – maybe we should leave them on for the summer!  A crisp day with a steady breeze to keep us on our toes. With almost 20 riders on duty for Sundays spin it was decided to split the group in two. Mark Monaghan lead one of the groups for the day and both groups met up at the tea stop in Edenderry.

This week we travelled some roads less travelled and maybe there is a reason why I never remember riding some of these roads before.  We headed out though Rochfordbridge and Rhode and  when we met the Edenderry/Daingean road we went straight across for a route that took us through the bumpy marshy roads towards Bracknagh. The surface improved as we headed for Clonbullogue and it was on to Edenderry for a tea stop after 65km on the clock where comparisons with the trip a bunch of club members made to the Tour of Flanders last year were made. With a direct tail wind home we finished off the 99km spin with ease. The group welcomed Sinead Roche on her first A group spin this week.   See todays route at: www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/57572472/

Recovery week ahead, starting tomorrow,  for riders following the A group plan. Next Sunday will be a shorter and slower spin to ensure to finish a proper recovery week. Many coaches will stress the importance of recovery weeks after 3 or 4 weeks training. It’s during this recovery week that the body adapts to the stress that it has been subject to over the previous weeks and recovers stronger than it was before the 4 weeks training – if you don’t take a recovery week your body  does not get stronger and the result can be fatigue, injury or illness. After the recovery spin next week we will start Base 2 period of the training plan that myself, Robbie Kenny and Dave Fagan prepared for this winter with feedback from last years plan from riders. If you have any feedback on the first phase of the plan or route suggestions for future spins please let me know. Attached is the A group winter plan for anyone who missed it when it was sent out originally.
