Good Weekend for Peter Rimmer in Ballinrobe

Lakeside Wheelers made another competitive foray into the west last weekend with a strong team entering the Marrey Bikes Ballinrobe 2-Day.  This is a handicapped stage race in which the A3 group get a head start over the combined A2 A1 bunch. Usually the race is won by a rider in the A3 bunch and the race is always popular for this reason, however this year was a little different!

On stage 1 on Saturday, the chasing group worked hard and caught the A3’s very quickly, before long the attacks started, David O’Louglin of Cunga racing was keen to stamp his authority on the peloton and initiated a break. Our super A2 Peter Rimmer is always on form for the Ballinrobe 2 day and found himself in good company in the successful break of the day.  “I saw the break go so I went with it, then I looked around and thought what am I doing here with O’Loughlin & Prendegast! But I was feeling strong and stayed with the break when O’Loughlin jumped out the break I was ok to go with him along with another rider, I think we got 30 seconds on the bunch so it was a good first day!”.  Peter finished a very impressive fifth on the first stage in very good company and in so doing set himself up as the GC contender for the Wheelers.

Peter is a real team player and unknown to most in the club he often sacrifices his own result to work hard for whoever is in yellow or high in the General Classification. So I’m sure all were delighted to help Peter, Peter said that Steven Franzoni was happy to sit in the bunch and spectate for the weekend!

On SUnday morning, Peter rode a good time trial and kept himself in contention. The third stage was just a case of watching the attacks and ensuring Peter had an incident free ride to the finish. Well done to the team with Peter finishing 6th overall and Dave Fagan only a minute 40 down and in 14th place and also winning the A3 prize on the Sunday morning time trial.
