Last Saturday April 14th saw the conclusion of the 5 week long Beginners Cycling Program ran by Lakeside Wheelers. The weather Gods have certainly been on our side throughout the five weeks as a beautifully sunny morning greeted the 18 participants that signed on this week. Our leaders this week, Karl & Cathy O T. did a recap on all the cycling safety tips and also on the various topics discussed over the previous 4 weeks.

We split into two groups with Karl taking a slightly stronger group out first and Cathy following a couple of minutes later out the gates of ORS & headed out along the by-pass and over the Joe Dolan bridge and then on towards Dysart and into Castletown Geoghegan. Once again the bench outside Claffey’s shop was the perfect spot for our break and although no scones with jam & cream were on offer, there was an ice cream or two being enjoyed.

With everyone refuelled, Karl set off first again with his group and headed for Loughnavalley and straight across and in the direction of the Ballymahon road. Cathy’s group took a right soon after Loughnavalley and came out at Rathconrath village (avoiding Skeagh hill) and then all along the lovely rolling hills on the Ballymahon road and back to ORS with 50k under their belts! Karl took his unsuspecting group further along the road from Loughnavalley and came out at the bottom of Skeagh and treated everyone to an attempt of the mighty Skeagh and by all accounts the group had no bother going up the hill once they got the gearing right and then continued all the way in the Ballymahon Road to the ORS with an extra few Km’s and the lovely Skeagh Hill to their credit.

The Beginners program has been a huge success and judging by the feedback, everyone enjoyed it and also learned a great deal about cycling in a group and picked up some very useful hints and tips along the way. It provided a platform for people to decide if cycling is for them and whether or not they wanted to join the Lakeside Wheelers and reap the benefits that are part and parcel of being in a club OR even if they want to just continue cycling individually. I would like to thank all the participants over the five weeks and I look forward to cycling with you all again on the Saturday or Sunday morning spins and I certainly hope you all enjoyed the 5 weeks as much as I did.

A big big thank you also to the volunteers from Lakeside Wheelers who led the groups each week and also the extras who turned up to help out  and indeed some were there every week. As I've said already, without such co-operation, it's just not possible to run these programs.
