Fantastic Social Occasion brings 2010 Race League to a close.

Last Wednesday saw the final round of our 2010 Race League and what a night it was. On the racing front there was a very competitive 20 mile dash and in a surprise finish it was novice, PJ Carey taking the spoils very narrowly from another Dysart “newbie” Dan O’Toole. These two took full advantage of their handicap and rode strongly to stay away from the chasers who, although they were doing their level best to close the gap, never actually brought back the minutes. All in all this was a very fitting finish to this year’s league and as usual our ever efficient league organiser Mark Horohoe, has just graced my inbox with the results and some statistics.

This year’s event produced one of the closest finishes since the league began and  with a total of 100 members taking part it has to be our most successful to date. The category winners were as follows: 1st place in the RED category went to Mark O’Hara followed in 2nd by Steve Franzoni and 3rd Robbie Kenny. 1st place in YELLOW category was Richie Lenihan followed in 2nd by Mark Monaghan and 3rd Kevin Marshall. The 1st BLUE category rider was Nigel Scarff followed in 2nd by Paula Murray and 3rd Breda Daly. Our overall winner of Race League 2010 is Richie Lenihan so congrats to you Richie and hopefully you will defend in 2011. Prizes will be presented as usual at our Christmas party so until then well done to every member who took part and thanks to all who made it the success it was.
It is important to realise that whilst events like this are very enjoyable for all of us to take part in, there are some very hard working people in the background making sure all goes safely and fairly. I will not name all names as everybody knows the main players but it would be totally unforgivable if I did not mention Mark Horohoe who has almost singlehandedly run this event for several years, thanks Mark and well done on yet another fantastic summer league. You will notice that I said “almost” and Mark himself will recognise the fact that he got great assistance from John Nugent who stepped in when Mark’s fellow competitions officer had to step down earlier in the year, and also from his wife Cathy who ensured handicaps, safety, results and literally everything else was correct. Thanks lads and roll on 2011.

To complete the night, the committee this year decided to try and bring the social element of the league to higher level and hosted a BBQ which proved to be a great success. There was close on 90 people in attendance and all were treated to the culinary skills of our social officer Adrian Murphy, who turned out 100 of his now famous beef burgers. Adrian was ably assisted by Pauric Devine and Eddie Tormey who ensured the kitty was correct and the buns were well toasted. As a follow up to our team time trial which was held at the Criterium we presented prizes to each of the teams who were victorious on the night. A special presentation was also made to Stuart Cox in recognition of his participation in the 2010 FBD RAS which was held at the beginning of the summer.
